Returning to a home that has been robbed is never a good feeling. Not only can it cause that but the feeling of being violated can cause you to feel fearful in a place that is supposed to provide safety and security.

1. Keep Ladders Stored Away

The last thing you want to see is a ladder leading up to a second-story window. Not only do they provide easy access but they also decrease the amount of effort the burglar has to put into the break-in. Also, when an upstairs window is open, that tells the thief that a home has no home security.

If you are serious about your home security, then you should also be serious about keeping your ladder secured away in your garage or basement. If your home is connected to a security alarm, ensure that all windows are also connected.

2. Keep Trash Out of Sight

Trash can be an easy give away of what type of items a home has especially if items are expensive like computers or televisions. The worst time this open invite could occur is following the holidays. In order to prevent knowledge from getting out, it’s best to break down the boxes completely and hiding it all in your trash or recycle cans.

3. Cut Back Window Hedges

Reducing the number of overgrown plants and hedges surrounding windows will take away hiding places for the burglar.

Not only cut back bushes and small trees around windows but around doors too. You want to make sure that your windows and doors are completely visible from the street. You can take it a step further and install lighting that is motion detection.

4. Replace Your Wooden Door with Metal

If you don’t want to come home to a kicked in the front door, then you need to replace it with a metal one before it happens.

While you are at it, make sure to include heavy-duty deadbolts throughout your doors too.

5. Keep Alarm Systems Out of View

Normally, a home security system control panel is near the front door. So you need to ensure that there is nothing that could reveal its exact location, such as a mirror. This can easily give your alarm system’s location away and also knowing if it has been armed or not.

So go ahead and move the mirror to a different location so that the alarm system is still hidden.

6. Hire a House Sitter

To prevent a burglar from thinking no one is home, it would be a good idea to hire a house sitter as you are away. This person will be able to cut the grass and make your home appear occupied even when it’s empty. If your car is left in the driveway, make sure that the doors are locked so that the burglar is unable to gain access after activating the garage door opener.
